Leopards are the last of the big five roaming free outside game reserves and
national parks in South Africa. It is here (the largest land mass of Africa), where
leopards are under threat.
Ingwe aims to conserve and protect this precious resource. After all leopards are
at the top of the food chain and as such a key indicator of a healthy eco-system,
which in turn affects us all.
To do this we are gathering data on leopard density, behaviour and population
dynamics outside of formally protected areas, enabling reasoned policy decisions
to be made. Remarkably this data does not currently exist. We need to fill this gap
in understanding before its too late.
Adopt a Leopard and be involved in preserving free roaming leopards in Africa.
Adopt a leopard is focusing on two mature female leopards with young cubs. We'll
be closely monitoring Diamond and Grace in 2012, watching her cubs grow and
eventually leave home. And it is that point as they grow and learn where the cubs
face the dangers from human conflict. Poachers snares, livestock farmers (some
(but not all) see leopards as vermin reducing their income). With your help we
aim to liaise with the local community and in that way hopefully head off any fatal
incidents. Adopt a leopard and you'll not only be contributing towards our work
but you'll receive regular updates on their progress, photographs as the cubs
grow see more
